Prologue

*one day, Thor is sitting at a table while the others talk, thinking. They had lost to Thanos. And it’s all his fault. He should’ve gone for the head. He doesn’t know what he’s going to do. If he had just killed him when he had the chance... now everything is gone. His mother. His father. His friends. His home. His kingdom. His brother. And now half of all life. He’s so busy mourning he scarcely hears what the others say. But, suddenly, he hears something about being able to undo this. Upon hearing this, he instantly stands and walks up to Carol, who he thinks is the one who said it. He suddenly extends his hand and summons stormbreaker. She doesn’t even flinch*

Thor: I like this one...

*The others nod.*

Steve: Let’s get this son of a gun...

*Later, they all, except tony, sit in the Milano. Rocket turns*

Rocket: Alright, who here hasn’t been in space before?

*everyone except Thor, Nebula, Carol, and of course Rocket raise their hands*

Rocket: Don’t throw up on my ship... we’re approaching the jump...

*They suddenly jump and appear in front of a planet, not unlike earth.*

Carol: I’ll check it out.

*she stands and flies out of the ship and down to the planet. A few minutes later, she returns*

Carol: There’s no defenses. It’s just him.

*meanwhile, Thanos sits, making himself dinner in his farm house, when suddenly, a blast comes through the wall. Before he knows what’s happening, all the remaining avengers are attacking him at once. Thor chops off his hand and it falls to the ground. Thanos screams. Rocket rolls over the gauntlet.*

Rocket: Oh no...

*The stones are gone*

Natasha: Where are the stones?!

Carol: Answer the question!

Thanos: Gone... reduced to atoms...

Bruce: You used them two days ago!

Thanos: I used the stones to destroy the stones... it almost killed me... they served no purpose but temptation...

Natasha: Search everywhere. He’s got to be lying.

Nebula: My father is many things... a liar is not one of them...

*Thanos pants. Thor looks angry. As he looks at Thanos’s scarred face, all he can think about is what he did to his brother. As Thanos speaks, his deceiving words sound like nails on a chalkboard to Thor*

Thanos: Perhaps I judged you too harshly, daughter...

*Thor, Finally losing his cool, swings his axe and chops Thanos’s head clean off. Everyone gasps. Thor pants*

Rocket: What did you do?...

Thor: I went for the head...

*he turns and leaves*

Part I: A Low

*five years later, there’s a knock at Thor’s door in New Asgard. Rocket opens the door and he and Bruce Banner enter. It’s too dark to see anything*

Rocket: Hello? Thor? Thor?

*Bruce turns on a light. The light reveals a dirty room, cluttered by seemingly random things. Bruce looks to see Thor sitting on the floor, his back facing them. He has his fingers in his hair, which has grown out longer, and more unruly than ever before, as if about to pull it out in stress. He’s not wearing a shirt. He’s surrounded by empty beer cans, and shot glasses. They hear him hiccuping softly, and even random sobs.*

Rocket: Oh, boy...

*They approach him quietly. They see his tear stained face and the dark circles under his eyes. He stares blankly ahead. Something’s held loosely in his hand. Some sort of small piece of gold, or some similar metal. It’s still too dim to tell exactly. Bruce looks closely. He’s seen it somewhere before. But he can’t quite put his finger on it. Suddenly, the image of where he’d seen it pops into his head. It’s the badge that had been pinned on the front of Loki’s armor. Thor must have taken it off his corpse just moments before the ship exploded. Thor’s fingers subconsciously close over the badge and he hiccups.

There’s a tattoo on his arm, but he holds his hand over most of it. Rocket looks at Bruce, who scratches his head and sighs*

Rocket: Thor? You in there bud?

*Thor mutters, his voice creaky from disuse*

Thor: Hello... Rabbit...

*his eyes roll up and he falls back. Bruce and Rocket catch him and lay him gently down.*

Bruce: He’s in a stupor... we’ll have to wait for him to snap out of it...

*Thor hiccups.*

Bruce: Which could take a while...

Rocket: Are we sure he’s not dead?

*later, Thor walks through his cluttered hut, Bruce and Rocket trying to negotiate with the drunk god of Thunder. Bruce tries to see what the tattoo is, but Thor keeps it out of view. He hiccups as he speaks*

Thor: Whatever- *hic*- you want from me, the answer’s- *hic*- no. I have too much- *hic*- training to do.

Bruce: Training? Thor, this is what you’ve been training for! We have a chance to undo this! You have to at least try!

Thor: Undo- *hic*- what?

Bruce: Undo Thanos.

*Thor stops. He stands stock still. He suddenly turns and grabs Bruce’s shirt threateningly. He growls, tears in his eyes, and his voice quivering*

Thor: Don’t... say... that... name...

*Bruce sighs*

Bruce: Thor... let me go... you don’t want me going green in here...

*Thor’s grip loosens*

Bruce: That’s it... You’re ok...

*Thor sniffs and hiccups. He lets go.*

Bruce: It’s understandable you’d be afraid of... that guy.

Thor: What? I’m not- *hic*- I’m not afraid of “that guy”! I’m the one who- *hic*- killed “that guy”! Did either of you kill that guy?! No!

*despite his effort of concealment, tears roll down his face*

Bruce: Thor...

*Thor hiccups and wipes his eyes*

Bruce: We can undo what... he... did...

*Thor looks at him*

Thor: Can...

*Bruce smiles*

Thor: Loki?

*Bruce nods. Thor laughs tearfully with delight. His expression suddenly changes. He looks down at the badge in his hand. The badge that would still be on Loki’s armor, had Thor done his job. He thinks about how he let Loki fall. That can’t happen again. He shakes his head and steps back*

Thor: No... no, no, I can’t... I can’t... I’ll just mess it up again...

Bruce: Thor...

*Thor sobs and hiccups*

Bruce: You helped me... now let me help you...

*Thor sighs, and begins to take another swig from his beer, but Bruce pushes the can down and shakes his head*

Bruce: No more. Seriously.

*Thor sighs. On the ride back, he sits next to Bruce and Rocket, still hiccuping, though not as violently. He now wears a patched, scrappy, dusty, brown jacket, but still no shirt under it.*

Rocket: So... what you been doing the past five years?...

*Thor hiccups. He reaches into his coat pocket and pulls out the badge. He turns it over and over in his fingers, staring at it. Try as he might to forget it all, he could never bring himself to get rid of the last bit of Loki he has. He tried to hide it. But he found himself dig it right back up.*

Thor: I built New Asgard... then I tried to forget it all... took a page out of Valkyrie’s book... I hid... and... that’s pretty much it... only thing else I do is train... stay vigilant... I’m just trying to forget what I lost and protect what I have, y’know... but even now... the idea of facing him...

*Thor sighs and tucks the badge gently back into his pocket. Bruce sighs*

Bruce: Thor... you lost a lot more than the rest of us... everything you knew... we all, except you and... well... Barton, have at least one person left... and I honestly don’t know which one of you is handling it worse. And, I mean, Barton even has Natasha...

*Thor sighs*

Bruce: It’s understandable you’d be afraid... but... it’s not like you to hide... especially not for this long.

*Thor sighs. After a moment, he speaks*

Thor: Four years ago... I was diagnosed with severe PTSD... very, very severe...

Bruce: Oh, Thor...

Thor: It had something to do with losing literally everything... the guilt and shame... Valkyrie made me go to a therapist when she noticed I was having multiple panic attacks a day... I told her I’m sure it was fine... a lot of people were traumatized after the decimation... but they said it was extremely bad and I required treatment... therapy or whatever... but... nothing worked... so I hid... I isolated myself for four years... until you two came I just sat alone in the dark, drinking, training, and mourning... I literally never saw anybody... I trained, mentally and physically, every day, in hopes that if danger did come... I could do it right this time... but... I don’t feel any more prepared than I did all those years ago...

*Rocket sighs*

Rocket: None of us do...

Bruce: Look, Thor, where you’re going you probably won’t even have to face Th- I mean, him.

Thor: It’s not just him. Just the thought of the battlefield... even my family... oh, gosh...

*he takes another swig from his beer and crushes the can, the froth spewing out the opening and running down his hand. Bruce sighs*

Bruce: That’s not the answer, bud...

*Thor sighs*

Thor: I know... But until now I didn’t know what was... this has to work...

Bruce: It will...

Part II: The How

Thor: But how will it work? How can we bring back Loki? He’s in Valhalla!

Bruce: That’s the thing. Maybe he’s not...

*He pulls a dusty volume from the foot. A book on Norse mythology. The Midgardian version of the book of Yggdrasil. He opens it*

Bruce: According to this, when Asgardians die, their spirit goes one of two places: Valhalla or Hel. It goes to Valhalla if they die performing an act of heroism, and it goes to Hel if they die performing an act that causes harm. If I’m right, I think Loki’s death could be interpreted either way. He was trying to save you, but hurt a lot of people doing so. So there’s a fifty percent chance he could be in Hel.

*Thor moans*

Thor: Thanks for putting that thought in my head...

*He reaches for his flask, which is strapped to his belt. But Bruce stops him*

Bruce: Just hear me out. Valhalla cannot be accessed by any living mortal, no matter how powerful. But Hel, with enough raw power, such as the Odinforce, can! And we might just have enough power to access it, thanks to this...

*He holds up a small red cylinder*

Bruce: Pym particles. Highly unstable, but extremely powerful. With these, we might can find a way to access Hel. We can’t exactly open a rift to Hel like your father did, but maybe we can go through the barrier! It says in this book that the reason Asgardian bodies are burned or disintegrated, or in Loki’s case, blown up, is to reduce them to atoms, so they may easily pass through the barrier of the living and reassemble on the other side. These Pym particles can shrink you down to a subatomic level, and theoretically allow you to pass through that barrier, if it’s real, and maybe, just maybe...

Thor: Bring back Loki...

*He looks to be thinking*

Thor: I don’t understand... why are you doing this for me?

Bruce: Because... you’ve done so much for all of us... the least we can do is help you through this rough patch. Besides, we’re trying to bring back the vanished anyway through time travel. Might as well bring back someone for you.

Thor: Well, why don’t we just use time travel to bring back Loki? You know, kill two birds with one stone.

*Bruce chuckles*

Bruce: First of all, That’s not how that works. We can only bring back the vanished. And second, even if that would work, he wouldn’t be the same Loki, he wouldn’t have all his memories.

Thor: Oh...

*he takes a swig from his flask*

Thor: Bruce, this is the last chance for me... if this doesn’t work... I have nothing to live for... I... I...

*he slowly trails off, slurring his words. His flask falls from his hand and onto the ground. His head goes limp. He nearly falls forward, but Bruce catches him*

Bruce: Gosh, you are so drunk.

*Thor slurs tiredly*

Thor: I’m... fine... just a little... woozy...

*he hiccups. Bruce picks up the flask and smells the contents. He winces*

Bruce: Oh my gosh, what is that?

*Rocket takes it and sniffs it.*

Rocket: It sure ain’t from earth. Way too strong for you terrans to handle. And apparently even some already super drunk Asgardians.

Bruce: You can tell that just by smelling it?

Rocket: What can I say? I was built with a keen sense of smell.

*Thor hiccups*

Rocket: Buddy, you’ve got a problem. This ain’t healthy.

*They hear Thor snore and hiccup. He’s out cold. Rocket sighs and helps Bruce sit the sedated Asgardian back. He grabs a scrappy blanket from the foot and Bruce helps him pull it over Thor. He puts his paw on Thor’s shoulder. Thor mumbles softly before falling silent*

Bruce: Cut him some slack, Rocket. He’s been through a lot, especially the past few years. Not to mention Valkyrie is probably a horrible influence on him. And in times of grieving, anyone is easily influenced. He’s confused right now. He would never let himself get like this if he wasn’t at such a low. But something tells me getting Loki back will help him greatly.

*Rocket hesitates*

Rocket: Why Loki? I mean, even before he knew the only one we could get back is Loki, he instantly jumped to him. Why?

Bruce: I’m not sure. There’s always been a deep bond there, even when they were on opposite sides. They grew up together. I think they need each other to feel whole... according to what I read in this book, brotherhood is a sacred bond in Asgard, connecting their hearts for life... it goes much deeper than just blood...

*When they arrive at HQ, Bruce and Rocket (who isn’t very much help due to his small stature) support the drowsy Asgardian as they exit the ship. Tony and Steve run up to meet them.*

Tony: Oh, gosh, Point Break, are you ok?

Thor(Slurring): Stark...

Steve: He looks a little green around the gills.

Bruce: He’s drunk. He’s been through a rough patch...

Tony: Yeah, well, we all have.

Bruce: No, I mean a really rough patch. We’ll talk about it later, we should get him inside.

*Steve looks concerned for his friend. An Asgardian has to drink a lot for it to affect them like this. Something is very wrong with Thor*

Steve: Alright, Thor, come on... you’re gonna be ok...

*he pulls Thor’s other arm over his shoulder and helps Bruce lead him down the ramp*

Tony: He’ll be fine, he’s just drunk.

Bruce: Yeah, about that...

*later, they sit in the lounge, Thor laying on the couch, fast asleep*

Tony: So our biggest weapon has an anxiety disorder that potentially makes him useless. Great.

Bruce: Tony, you had PTSD too. He’s not useless.

Tony: Yeah, but this? This is bad. He has been treated and it didn’t work. I was afraid of space. He lost everything. Not every case is the same, Bruce. You should know that. Thor is one of the bravest men I know, if it’s enough to get to him... I mean, just look at the signs! He’s been drunk nonstop for what, four, five years? And he has more self control than anybody else I know!... he’s not up to this... I can’t let you put the poor guy in this position...

*Bruce sighs*

Bruce: Tony... if we don’t... he might not snap out of this...

Steve: I mean, I lost a lot too, but I kinda feel lucky compared to the guy. We all are. He’s pitiful. He really has nothing left. No one to turn to. He’s alone in the world. It takes a lot of drinking to get a being like Thor to this state. And Thor never struck me as the type who would even allow himself to get drunk. That would be a blow to his honor. In the whole time I’ve known him I’ve never seen him tipsy, let alone drunk! For him, such a brave and proud man, to do this to himself... he must be really... Tony, he can’t stay like this. It’s extremely unhealthy. We gotta do what we can. He’s just gonna have to bite the bullet. We all are.

*Rocket, who sits on the back of the couch, looks down at Thor sadly.*

Rocket: Time hasn’t been kind to ‘im, that’s for sure... but that’s no excuse to be a wuss.

Bruce: Rocket... he lost more than any of the rest of us... he lost everything he ever knew... his entire life... he doesn’t have a person or thing in this universe... he doesn’t even have his purpose... he’s a shattered man...

*Thor’s eyes open slightly. He moans. Rocket looks down*

Rocket: He’s awake...

Thor: Rabbit...

*He sobs*

Thor: Rabbit... I’m sorry... I’m so sorry... it’s all my fault... I’m so sorry...

*he sobs and shakes his head. He tries to sit up. Rocket hops down to the arm of the couch an pushes his shoulders back down, supporting his head. Steve approaches Thor*

Steve: You’re alright, Thor.

Thor: Rogers... I’m so sorry... it’s all my fault...

Steve: You need to rest. Drinking excessively isn’t healthy, Thor. You of all people should know that, having lived in Asgard.

*Thor grabs Steve’s shoulder desperately, his hand shaking violently. In doing this, his sleeve rolls down, showing Steve his tattoo. Steve, seeing the image on his arm, sighs and, respecting Thor's privacy, gently rolls Thor's sleeve back up*

Thor: Steve... Steve I am so, so sorry... it’s my fault...

*Steve sighs, trying to comfort his friend*

Steve: No it’s not, Thor... you’re ok... you’re tired and confused... you need to rest...

*Thor slowly lets Steve go, nodding drowsily. His hand falls limp. He closes his eyes. Steve sighs*

Rocket: Ok... maybe that is a reason to be a bit of a wuss...

Steve: What was he drinking?

Rocket: By the smell of it, some of the strongest stuff in the galaxy... after, of course, drinking several beers.

Steve: It really is that bad, huh?

Tony: He thinks this is his fault?...

*Steve sighs*

Steve: He didn’t go for the head...

Tony: You see, this is what I’m talking about! In this state, he can’t be expected to-

Steve: Well he has to, Tony.

Tony: He’s barely up to getting his brother, he can’t get a stone!

Steve: Thor is capable. He can do it...

Part III: A Plan

*Later, Thor, who is now awake, stands in the training room, relentlessly punching a punching bag. Sweat rolls down his face. He stops and grabs an unopened beer can. He opens it and downs the whole thing in one go. He shakes his head. He suddenly hears a voice*

Voice: Upset?

*he turns to see Steve, his hands in his pockets. He turns back and hiccups*

Thor: Always...

*he punches the bag again*

Steve: It’s ok to be afraid, Thor...

*Thor instantly stops punching the bag*

Thor: What makes you think I’m afraid...

*he hiccups, and hits the side of his head with the heel of his hand to make his cybernetic eye look in the right direction. In his state, he has trouble controlling it*

Thor: I fear nothing...

Steve: Thor, Bruce told us. And you showed us while you were still out of it. You wouldn’t let my shoulder go. You’ve got quite the grip.

Thor: Oh...

*He hiccups. Steve sighs. He puts his hand on Thor’s shoulder*

Steve: You’re sure you’re ready for this, bud?

Thor: Of course I’m ready, why wouldn’t I be ready? I’ve been training for this moment for five years!

*he chuckles nervously. He grabs his flask, which he had fished out of the ship, and brings it up to his mouth. Steve stops him*

Steve: Thor...

*he looks him dead in the eye, both wearing a poker face. Finally, Thor crumbles under his gaze. He sobs and shakes his head*

Thor: I’m not ready... I’m not ready for this... what if he’s not there? What if he’s changed? What if I’ve changed? What if he’s angry? What if-

Steve: No more “what if”s Thor...

Thor: I can’t face him... I can’t... not after what happened...

Steve: But what will you do if you don’t?...

*Thor sighs*

Steve: Thor, you’re killing yourself... you can’t go on like this...

Thor: I can’t do this...

Steve: You can... you’re not in this alone... Everyone here has your back...

*Thor sighs*

Steve: We won’t send you in unprepared. You should come in here with us and plan. It’s not good for you to be alone. Besides, you are way too drunk to be punching things.

Thor: I’m not that-

*he hiccups and staggers. Steve gives him a look*

Thor: Yeah, I need to sit down...

*he begins to exit the room*

Steve: Thor...

*Thor stops and sighs*

Thor: Yes, Captain...

Steve: Things will get better...

*There’s a long silence. Thor pulls the badge out of his pocket and looks at it sadly. He nods slowly*

Thor: I know... they have to...

*he hiccups and exits. Later, Thor sits in the lounge with the others, who are talking about what they’re about to try to pull off. Thor sits silently, staring at his folded hands.*

Clint: Tony, I don’t think this is a good idea. I mean, this is Loki we’re talking about.

Tony: I think we’ve established most of my plans aren’t that good. But, hey. They reap results. Besides... he needs this, Clint...

*They look at Thor, who takes a large gulp of his beer. He wipes his mouth and hiccups. Steve sighs*

Steve: All right everybody. We have the how down, but we still need to figure out the when and the where. We know a good deal about most of the stones, the exception being reality. Thor, you’re familiar with it, why don’t you come up and tell us what you know... Thor?

*he looks to see Thor, his head limp and his eyes closed*

Natasha: Is he... asleep?

Rhodey: No. I‘m pretty sure he’s dead.

Rocket: Right?! Thor wake up!

*he slaps him and he wakes with a start*

Thor: Wha-?!

Rocket: Uncle Sam here wants you to tell us what you know on the reality stone.

Thor: Alright...

*he stands up drunkenly and walks in front of the holo screen. He points to the picture of the aether*

Thor: Let’s see, the aether, where to start? Well, firstly, it’s not a stone, you’re not looking for a stone. It’s more of an angry, red, sludge thingy. It’s incredibly dangerous. So much so there was a whole war my grandfather fought in to keep it out of the hands of the dark elves. Um, you don’t want to touch it or it will kinda enter your body and slowly kill you.

*he hiccups. Everyone looks slightly concerned, except Scott, who watches in awe as Thor’s story unfolds*

Thor: As a matter of fact, when it hid in my old girlfriend, Jane, she got really sick. I had to take her to Asgard to fix it. It was fun, she got to meet my parents, my friends, and even Loki...

*his expression changes*

Thor: Who... who’s dead now... they’re all dead... and Asgard’s gone... and Jane and I aren’t even dating anymore, so...

*Tony stands up and leads Thor away*

Tony: Alright, Thor, you did good, buddy.

*Thor hiccups*

Thor: I- I’m sorry, Tony, I don’t know what came over me...

*later, after hours of planning and experimenting, all the avengers walk to the platform in their quantum suits. They stand in a circle*

Steve: Alright, team. Most of us are going places we know, but that doesn’t mean you know what to expect. Stay vigilant. You know your teams, and you know your goals. Team one: mind, time, and space.

*Bruce, Tony, and Scott nod*

Steve: Team two: soul and power.

*Nebula, Rhodey, Clint, and Natasha nod.*

Steve: And team three: reality and, of course, Loki, for Thor’s sake.

*Thor and rocket nod.*

Steve: Though our goals may seem different, we’re all after the same thing. Finding what we lost...

*He looks at Tony, who’s looking at a photo of Morgan on a distant table*

Steve: And keeping what we’ve found...

*Tony turns to look at him and smiles weakly*

Steve: We only get one shot at this. One chance to do it right. Thor has been given the leftover particles from our tests to retrieve Loki, so we don’t have any to spare. With that, I only have one more thing to say...

*he holds out his hand to the center of the circle*

Steve: Avengers...

*the others, one by one, extends their hands*

Steve: Break...

*The rift opens and Thor feels a disorienting lurch*

Part IV: Hel

*The next thing he knows, Thor falls onto a cold stone floor. He pants, completely disoriented. His quantum suit retreats. He crawls to a wall and leans against it, shaking and sweaty. He grabs his flask and shakily pours the contents in his mouth. He looks around. He made it. He’s in Hel. Something he never thought he’d be excited about. He hiccups. He suddenly remembers Rocket*

Thor: Rabbit?

Rocket: I’m over here...

*Thor looks to see Rocket staring at something. Or, more accurately, someone. A trembling figure is lying on the ground. Thor looks around and notices they’re in an empty fighting arena. This guy looks like he’s been beaten up. He must be a gladiator. Rocket kneels down next to the man. Thor hiccups and stands unsteadily (whether it’s because of the trip or how drunk he is, not even he knows) He approaches.*

Rocket: You alright, kid?

*Thor hears the man wince and grunt*

Man: Who... are you?... how did you get here?...

*Thor gasps. Rocket turns. Thor looks faint. He breathes heavily and swallows, tears in his eyes. Without warning, he runs in front of the figure and kneels down. He lifts the man’s face so he can see it. The gladiator goes wide eyed and pushes himself up slightly. He sheds a tear. Thor wipes it away with his thumb*

Thor: Loki...

Loki: Thor... Thor, you’re here...

*Thor smiles tearfully and nods. Loki sits up weakly. Thor sobs and hugs him.*

Thor: Brother... I thought I lost you...

*Loki sobs and buries his face in Thor’s shoulder. Thor holds him tightly. He sniffs.*

Thor: I missed you so much...

*he puts his hands on Loki’s shoulders and holds him at arms length to get a good look at him. He looks weak and beaten. His clothes are torn and his face is pale. His armor is slightly ripped where Thor had torn off the badge. But other than the things affected by circumstances*

Thor: You haven’t changed a bit.

*Loki chuckles tearfully.*

Loki: Did you get a new eye?

*Thor chuckles. He hugs him again. Rocket approaches*

Rocket: So, you’re the brother I’ve heard so much about.

*Loki looks. He looks slightly confused. Thor hiccups*

Thor: Ah. Right. Loki, this is my friend, Rabbit.

*Loki looks at Thor then back at Rocket*

Loki: Thor, that’s a raccoon.

Thor: Two year old you would beg to differ.

Loki: Thor, I called a raccoon a rabbit one time-

Rocket: Wait, wait, wait! So you’re telling me, the reason you call me a rabbit...

*Thor shrugs. Loki looks at him and smiles. Thor looks at his brother. He can’t believe it. The full weight of the situation finally starts to set in on the drunken god. He just shakes his head and hugs him again, sobbing. This time, instead of tears of joy, he cries tears of guilt and remorse. Loki looks at Rocket, an expression of confusion and concern for his brother on his face. Rocket sighs. Loki slowly hugs Thor back and speaks softly*

Loki: Shh... you’re ok... you’re going to be ok... Shh...

*Thor just holds him tightly, not daring to let go. He closes his eyes and sobs. He says nothing.*

Loki: I’m here... I’m right here...

*Thor sniffs. He takes a swig from his flask with one hand and hiccups.*

Loki: What happened to you?

*Thor shakes his head. He speaks shakily, his voice breaking*

Thor: I’m so sorry, Loki! I’m in shambles! I have PTSD- *hic*- I’m constantly drunk! I gave up and allowed myself to get like this! I hid in fear for five years instead of actually- *hic*- doing something about it... I let you rot here for five years... I’m- *hic*- so sorry...

*Loki’s never seen his brother so vulnerable. When he sacrificed himself for Thor, he had no idea it would lead to this.*

Loki: Hey... hey, it’s ok... it’s ok... you’re ok...

Thor: It’s my- *hic*- fault he won! I was desperate- *hic*- I wasn’t thinking clearly-

Loki: Funny. That sounds exactly like how I felt when I took a dagger to Thanos. Thor, emotions make us do crazy things. I was so desperate to protect the family I found, I didn’t stop to think about the stones. And you were so desperate to avenge the family you lost...

Thor: I didn’t stop to think about the stones...

Loki: Thor, every minute I’ve been here I thought of you. The one person who loved me for me. The most important person to me in the universe. I spent years searching for love and acceptance, but the whole time I had it... in you... Brother, I have no regrets. I am here because I chose to be. I chose to risk my life protecting you. And I would do it again. Honestly, this whole experience has given me a lot of time to think. For so long I hid my heart. Tried to drown my emotions, and mask them behind trickery. But that’s never who I was. I was so afraid of hurting you, I tried to change myself. It took me so long to see you were all I needed. And now that we’re together again, I swear I will never take you for granted. You are everything to me... I see that now... you don’t need to be sorry, ashamed, or afraid. I picked my battles. I am so proud of you, even at your lowest... and I’m here for you to pick you back up again... like I should have always been...

*Thor sniffs*

Thor: I’ve changed, Loki...

*Loki smiles*

Loki: So have I...

*Thor sighs. He smiles*

Thor: Thank you...

*he sits up and wipes his eyes*

Thor: Enough about me... what happened to you? You look awful!

Loki: I... I lost...

Thor: What?

Loki: Thor, I’m undead. Everyone here is. Everyone except... our sister...

Thor: Hela?! She’s alive?!

*Loki nods*

Loki: Don’t ask me how. She rules this realm. She has complete control over the minds of the undead. When she calls we have no choice but to obey. She makes us fight one another for her entertainment, until we’re no more than dust... The undead can’t fight her power. It’s too strong. Whoever loses has to go again against another fighter. Only the winner gets to leave... I... never win... she doesn’t let me use my magic... it’s an endless cycle... as long as I have these...

*he rolls up his sleeves to reveal his wrists, bound in golden shackles without chains*

Loki: I’m undead... and her slave... I can’t leave with them... I’ve tried to get them off and return to you, but they cannot be broken... only Hela has the key...

*Thor grunts determinedly*

Thor: Then I’ll get the key from her. I swear to you, Brother, by the time the sun sets tonight, you will come home with me...

*Loki smiles*

Loki: I know...

Thor: Now tell me... where is Hela?

*Loki sighs*

Loki: At her throne...

Thor: Then that’s where we go...

Loki: “We”? Thor, I can’t come! She could make me hurt you! I have to stay behind. You can come back for me.

Thor: No. I’m not leaving you again...

Loki: Thor-

Thor: I need you, Brother... I can’t do this without you... I can’t...

*Loki sighs*

Loki: Fine...

Part V: Hela

*As they head to the throne room, the brothers talk, catching up after all these years.*

Thor: -And that’s when we found you...

Loki: It sounds like you’ve had a rough five years...

Thor: Yeah, but I’m sure not half as bad as yours.

Loki: No... no, I would take mine any day...

Thor: Why? You were forced to fight and suffer in literal Hel!

Loki: Yes... But I had one thing that you didn’t... one thing keeping me going...

Thor: What’s that?

Loki: ... Hope... I knew you’d come for me... because if anyone can do the impossible...

*he puts his hand on Thor’s shoulder. Thor reaches his opposite hand to his shoulder and puts his hand on Loki’s. He squeezes it gently*

Loki: It’s you...

*Thor sighs and takes his bandaged hand back, crossing his arms. Loki sighs, taking a hint, and removes his hand*

Thor: You must lower your expectations of me, Brother... I’ve failed far more than I’ve succeeded...

Loki: And you know what that makes you?...

*Thor takes a swig from his flask, hiccups, and sighs*

Thor: A failure?

Loki: Human... Brother, need I remind you of the things I’ve done? I mean, just look where I wound up. But one mustn’t judge a person by their worst mistakes... even if there are a lot of them...

*He hesitates*

Loki: Thor, you said that once you had thought the world of me... and the moment I heard that... had time to think on it... I knew... I knew it was time... time to stop running from my past and become the man you once thought me to be... I thought I had been protecting you... by pushing you away, tricking you, acting like I didn’t care... but you made me realize... that it was time to come home... make up for my mistakes... heal my wounds... be with the only person in this universe I truly cared for... even if it meant death... because... even though I tried to hide it... tried to stay away and be something I was not... I always thought the world of you... I still do...

*Thor smiles weakly*

Thor: I don’t know if I can face Hela, Loki... I hate to admit it... but...

Loki: You’re afraid... Thor, you have PTSD it’s understandable...

Thor: That’s what they all say, but that doesn’t change the fact it’s there...

*he hiccups.*

Loki: Thor... now that you’ve found me... we’ll make it through this... as long as we have each other... because as much as I tried to convince myself otherwise... tried to deny it... we make each other better... we’re Odinsons...

Rocket: Oh, cut it out before I hurl!

*Loki chuckles*

Loki: Speaking of cut, remind me to cut your hair when we get out of here. I think I liked it better short.

*Thor chuckles and uncrosses his arms*

Thor: Yeah... me too.

*he suddenly remembers something*

Thor: Oh... there’s one more thing.

Loki: What’s that?

*Thor reaches into his coat pocket. When he pulls out his hand, it’s in a fist around something. He opens his hand to reveal the badge*

Thor: I believe this belongs to you...

*Loki smiles*

Loki: I always wondered where that went...

*Thor chuckles. He carefully pins it on Loki’s armor. When he’s done, he sighs contentedly*

Thor: That’s better... Odinson...

*Loki chuckles. When they finally arrive at the throne room, Thor looks around. The room is dark, damp, and foreboding. Centered on the back wall sits a throne of bones, facing the hole in the wall overlooking the arena. At the center of the room sits a dusty old pedestal, appearing to also be made of bones. And atop the pedestal, a rusty, golden, old key hovers. Thor smiles. This might be easier than he thought. Loki, however, doesn’t look so pleased*

Loki: Thor, something isn’t right. It’s too easy.

*Thor doesn’t listen. He takes a swig from his flask and shakes his head. He approaches the pedestal and extends stormbreaker until the flat side of its blade is just under the key. He slowly lifts the axe up until the key is resting flat on the blade, and carefully pulls it out, taking the key with it. He, grabs the key in his hand, smiles, and turns back to Loki. But his eyes go wide. Loki stands, his eyes in the shadows, holding Rocket by the neck at arms length. Rocket struggles, kicking Loki’s hand with his back paws, and trying to yank away Loki’s hand with his front ones.*

Rocket: Put... me... down!

*Loki doesn’t respond. Thor suddenly hears a voice*

Voice: He won’t listen...

*Thor looks to see Hela stepping out of the shadows.*

Hela: He only answers to me...

*Thor growls*

Thor: You...

*he hiccups*

Hela: Drunk much? You should listen to our little brother more often... he’s clearly smarter than you... not that that’s saying much...

Thor: I don’t understand... I watched you die...

Hela: Fool... it will take a lot more than that to kill me... Surtur merely destroyed Asgard, weakening my powers and forcing me to retreat to Hel... And now, after all these years, I shall have my revenge... now...

*she extends her hand*

Hela: Give me the key... and only one of you has to get hurt...

*Thor looks at Rocket, who’s gasping for air, his eyes watering.*

Rocket: Don’t... do it, kid!... I’ll be fine!... Save your brother!

*The only thing keeping him from suffocating, is him pulling himself up, which prevents him from fighting. But, for now, he’s holding out. Thor nods and glares at Hela*

Thor: Never...

Hela: Have it your way...

*she summons her blades and charges at him. Thor dodges, gripping stormbreaker tightly*

Thor: We can still end this peacefully, Sister! I don’t want to fight!

Hela: Why? You scared?

*Though he’s hiding it, she’s right. He is scared. He hasn’t fought in years, and the last time he did, he lost. So much is on the line. But it’s too late to turn back now. He’s afraid of Hela. But no fear is greater than that of losing Loki again. His only and entire family. The most important person in the universe to him, and vice versa. He’s not going back to the way things were. He looks at his arm and rolls up the sleeve, finally showing the tattoo... “RIP Loki- 'The sun will shine on us again'”. He grunts determinedly.*

Thor: Yeah... for you...

*he swings stormbreaker at her. But, due in no small part to his intoxication, he misses and staggers. Hela smirks*

Hela: So, you got a new toy? That’s not playing fair, Brother...

Thor: I’m way past playing fair!

*he slashes at her again. Again, she barely has to dodge for it to miss*

Hela: Too bad. Looks like I’m going to have to break this one too...

Thor: I’d like to see you try...

*lightning begins to shine in his eyes. Rocket, despite his situation, grins. He wonders if Loki can see this. Thor‘s getting his thunder back... Thor swings at Hela, lightning crackling down his axe. This time it hits. But Hela quickly recovers.*

Hela: What makes you think you can face me? You couldn’t even handle Thanos!

*Thor, for a split second stops. Rocket speaks*

Rocket: Don’t... listen to her... Thor!... she’s just... tryin’... to get in... your head!

*Thor grunts determinedly and more lightning forms around stormbreaker. He points it at her and shoots her with a lightning blast. She growls. Now that she’s not at full power, and Thor’s using a much more powerful weapon, this actually hurts her*

Hela: Fool! You think lightning can stop me?

Thor: No... I know it can...

*he swings stormbreaker back and forth, slinging blast after blast of lightning at Hela, gradually backing her up against the wall, until he has her cornered. He readies stormbreaker for one last fatal swing*

Thor: This is your last chance to surrender...

*Hela growls*

Hela: The goddess of death does not surrender...

*he sighs. He didn’t want to have to do this*

Thor: Then you have until the count of three...

*he grips his axe*

Thor: One...

*he brings it back*

Thor: Two...

*She glares at him*

Thor: Three...

*he closes his eyes and swings his axe. He opens one eye to see the blade lodged in the wall. But no Hela. She must have teleported away. Turns out Loki isn’t the only one Frigga taught some sorcery to. But that doesn’t matter now. He hiccups and turns to see Loki shaking his head. Loki instantly lets go of Rocket, who winces as he hits the ground*

Rocket: I’m ok...

Loki: Sorry!

Rocket: You’d better be...

*Loki sighs. He looks at Thor and smiles.*

Loki: I saw it all...

*Thor smiles and approaches Loki. Loki looks at the tattoo on his arm. He smirks*

Loki: Let me guess... you were drunk?

*Thor follows Loki's gaze and smiles weakly*

Thor: No, actually. I got this just a couple days after I killed Thanos. I was sober.

Loki: You...

*Thor smiles weakly. Loki feels tears well in his eyes. Thor had lost so many people. But he only chose to make his own body a tribute to one... him. Loki hugs him.*

Loki: I missed you too...

*Thor smiles. Loki teases*

Loki: She’s right though... you should listen to me more often... nonetheless... I knew you could do it...

*Thor chuckles and steps back*

Thor: Give me your arms...

*Loki holds out both of his arms. Thor rolls up Loki’s sleeves and inserts the key in one of the shackles. He turns it and the shackle falls to the ground. He does the same to the other. The second they’re both removed, color begins to return to Loki’s skin. Loki inhales, as if he had been holding his breath for a long time(which he technically had). He chuckles tearfully. He wipes his eyes. He looks like he wants to say something but is lost for words. Finally, he manages to breathe the words*

Loki: I... I’m alive...

*Thor smiles. He hugs Loki, who looks to be on the verge of tears.*

Loki: Thank you...

Thor: Do not thank me. I was merely returning a favor...

*Rocket sighs and smirks. He’ll let them have their moment*

Part VI: Home Sweet Home

*after a moment, Loki steps out of Thor’s arms*

Loki: I hope I can honestly say I returned to the living world a better man than I left it...

Thor: I think you were always a good man, Loki... just mislead and confused... it may be a little late to say it... but I still do think the world of you... I just... at the time, thought I had lost... well... you... the brother I grew up with... but... you were still there...

*Loki smiles*

Loki: And I’m not going anywhere for a long time...

Rocket: Alright, you’ve had your fun, but, in case you’ve forgotten, we’ve got a job to do.

Thor: Oh, right!

*he hiccups*

Thor: That reminds me, I brought something for you...

*He pulls a wristband out of his pocket. He puts it on Loki*

Thor: It’s a quantum GPS and suit. It should fit you. It’s what brought me here, and what will help get us home. Push this button.

*Loki does so, and the quantum suit forms around him. He looks down at it. He notices the avengers symbol. He looks up at Thor*

Thor: Welcome to the team... Avenger...

*Loki smiles. Thor and Rocket turn on theirs. Thor grins*

Thor: Let’s get the aether... that is, unless, of course, you want to go home and sit this one out...

*Loki smirks*

Loki: Oh, you know I wouldn’t miss this...

Thor: Alright then.

*Thor takes a swig from his flask and he and Rocket begin to type the coordinates into their suits*

Thor: The coordinates are already in your suit. I have to warn you, this will feel weird. We go in three... two... one!

*they hit the button and feel a lurch. Before Loki knows what’s happening, he feels himself land. He looks up to see...*

Loki: ... Home...

*they’re standing in the halls of the palace in Asgard. Loki sighs. He looks at Thor. Thor looks apprehensive. He suddenly goes wide eyed. Loki follows his gaze and grins mischievously. Jane. Thor gulps. Loki whispers to Rocket*

Loki: That’s her...

Rocket: Alright, Thor, you distract your girlfriend, and Loki and I will extract the aether.

*Thor gulps and shakes his head*

Thor: Um, y-y’know my father had a really nice wine cellar downstairs, why don’t we-

Rocket: Aren’t you drunk enough already?

*Thor sighs*

Thor: You’re right, you’re right, I-

*he trails off, staring out into the distance in horror. Loki follows his gaze and goes wide eyed*

Rocket: What is it this time?

*he looks to see an older woman, walking down a distant hall*

Rocket: Who’s she?

Loki: ... Our mother...

*Thor swallows the lump in his throat*

Thor: She dies today...

Rocket: Oof... that’s today?

*Thor nods absentmindedly. Loki sighs*

Loki: Thor... we must get the aether....

*Thor looks at his mother. He looks at his home. He looks at Jane. He could have never imagined how hard this would be... He shakes his head*

Thor: I can’t do this. I never should have come.

Loki: Thor, I know it’s hard. You know how much I loved Mother, but lives are at stake. Billions and billions of lives. We have a chance to bring them back. I have a chance to right my wrongs. We must be strong. You need to go distract Jane.

Thor: I can’t. I can’t talk to her. Not after all this time.

Loki: Thor, you defeated Hela! Twice! Did that not give you any confidence? If you can best the goddess of death, you can talk to your ex!

Thor: Oh yeah? We’ll talk about this when you finally ask Brunhilde out.

Loki: Thor!

Thor: I can’t do this! I can’t stand here while our mother is about to die, and flirt with the girl who dumped me!

Loki: Thor, calm down, someone’s going to hear us.

Thor: I can’t! I think I’m having a panic attack...

*Rocket groans*

Rocket: Come here.

Thor: I’m panicki-

Rocket: No, come here!

*Thor steps closer*

Rocket: Closer...

*Thor steps closer and Rocket slaps him*

Loki: Rabbit!

Rocket: Listen, your mom’s gone. Really gone! But there are billions of people who are only kinda gone that we have a chance to get back! So is it to much to ask for you to wring the beer outa your beard and talk to the girl?

*Thor sighs, still obviously internally panicking*

Thor: No... no. You’re right. I can do this.

*Rocket nods. Loki honestly can’t believe that worked with the state Thor’s in right now.*

Rocket: Then come on.

*They begins to head towards Jane’s room when Thor shakes his head and mutters*

Thor: I can’t do this...

*he turns and runs*

Rocket: So, wh- Thor?

*they turn to find that Thor’s gone. Loki sighs*

Loki: I knew this wouldn’t work...

Rocket: I don’t understand this guy! He can fight the goddess of death, but he can’t talk to some girl!

Loki: He’s afraid, Rabbit. He has-

Rocket: PTSD, I know, I know... but he wasn’t afraid to fight Hela or talk to you!

Loki: Well, I think he was. But I think the fear of being alone again outweighed the others, forcing him to push through. Now that I’m back, he doesn’t have that pushing him. So now his fear is overwhelming him, pushing him in the opposite direction. In both scenarios, he was giving in to what his fear told him. But now that’s a negative thing... I’ll go look for him. You try and get the aether.

*Rocket nods. Loki runs in the opposite direction. Meanwhile, Thor stands behind a pillar, watching his mother. Suddenly, he hears a voice whispering right behind him*

Voice: Thor!

*Thor screams and turns to see Loki*

Loki: What are you-

Voice: Boys!

*They both scream and look to see*

Thor: M-Mother!

Frigga: What are you boys doing? Why is Loki out of his cell?

Thor: Oh, um, well, you see, he was just...

Loki: Stretching my legs! It, um it’s very cramped down there. Thor here was just, um... e-escorting me! Yes, escorting me. Making sure I don’t escape.

*Frigga raises one eyebrow*

Frigga: Hm... what are you two wearing? Neither of your outfits are from Asgard.

Thor: Oh, um... Jane gave me mine! A-and Loki summoned his!

Loki: Yes! Yes, that’s right!

*Frigga looks closely at Thor, who is obviously trying to hold back tears*

Frigga: What happened to your eye?

Thor: Old injury! You remember when that guy hit me in the eye with that- that thing, right?

Frigga: Thor, you smell of alcohol! And Loki of smoke and death!

*Loki looks mildly offended.*

Thor: Y-yes well...

*Frigga sighs and puts her hands on both the brothers faces. Loki puts his hand on hers.*

Frigga: The future has not been kind to you, my sons...

Thor: Wh-what?! I never said I was from the future!

Frigga: Thor... you are great at many things... lying is not one of them... though I expected better from your brother...

*Thor sobs and nods*

Thor: You’re right... we’re t-totally from the future...

*at this, Loki finally breaks into tears. Frigga hugs them both*

Frigga: There there... mother’s here...

*Thor sobs. Loki kisses his mother’s cheek.*

Thor: I’m sorry, Mom... I’m so sorry...

Frigga: Tell me what happened...

*a few minutes later, they sit in their mother’s quarters. Thor has tears running down his face.*

Thor: -And that’s when I found Loki...

*Loki sighs, staring out the window, holding his mother’s hand. He has so many questions, and far too little time.*

Thor: I’m such an idiot...

Frigga: An idiot? No. A failure? Definitely.

Thor: That’s a bit harsh, isn’t it?

Frigga: You failed. And you know what that makes you?

Thor: I-

Frigga: Just like everybody else...

Thor: Well I’m not supposed to be like everyone else, am I?

Frigga: You are so blinded by who you’re supposed to be, you’ve forgotten who you are...

Thor: I- I’m sorry, but this all sounds like something Loki told me earlier...

*Frigga laughs. Loki blushes*

Frigga: Because it’s something I’ve had to tell him... whenever I visited him in his cell, he’d tell me he was a disgrace or a failure for letting himself do what he did... letting himself lose control... but it wasn’t because of who he is as a person... it’s just human nature... when one’s angry or afraid, he can make irrational decisions... Loki would always listen to my words as if they were sacred... up until just a few minutes ago...

*Loki goes wide eyed, remembering the horrible things he had said to her. He sobs*

Loki: Oh... Mother, I didn’t mean any of that... I’m so sorry... I was angry at father for not listening and took it out on you... you are my mother, and I very well know I was wrong! I just didn’t want to admit that I had let Thanos take my mind! I should never have-

Frigga: Loki...

*Loki looks down at his hands. They’re turning blue. His face is covered in frozen tears. He quickly forces himself back to normal and wipes his eyes*

Loki: I’m sorry... it’s just where I’m from... I never got the chance to tell you that... you have no idea how many times if played over what I would have said in my head...

Frigga: My child... I sense something deeper also troubles you... Thor told me his pains... you mustn’t be afraid to show yours...

*Loki sighs*

Loki: Why did Father treat me the way he did... not even attempt to hide his favoritism...

*Frigga sighs*

Frigga: Because he never allowed himself to get close to you... you should have seen the way he looked at you when you were a baby... he loved you so much... but he knew you were the only one who could end the wars... and the day that happened... you’d no longer be his son... he wouldn’t allow himself to get attached... because he was afraid of having his heart broken...

*Loki sighs softly*

Frigga: Boys, you’ve both been through so much... you’ve lost so much... you’ve been hurt and scarred... you have your demons... Loki... you have to live every waking moment fighting your past mistakes... being punished for things you thought were right or that were out of your control... trying to hide the evil that has scarred your heart, whether through Thanos, or your blood... it’s forced you into a life of fear and hiding... a waking nightmare... Thor... you have to face others knowing you can’t always be who they need or expect you to be... knowing that you’ve made mistakes, and that they’ve hurt people... there is so much loss and guilt weighing on your shoulders... you’ve taken everything you can bear... and you’re still asked to do more... the world has forced you into a state of constant anxiety, because you’re so afraid of failure... of somehow losing more... making things worse... being hurt... your fear drives you... so much so you’ve resorted to alcohol for comfort... you both have taken everything you can handle... we all know I won’t always be here to comfort you... you need to be there for each other to help lighten your burdens...

*she turns to Thor*

Frigga: Thor... you are not expected to do everything... But it is up to you to protect your younger brother from any, like Thanos, who would wish to use his dark past against him or do him harm... Who would prey on his own self doubt and fear... you must remind him that his past does not define him... that his future is his own... that he’s not alone... he has someone to confide in and love... show him he doesn’t have to fear himself... his race is not who he is... he’s appreciated... it’s up to you to love him... be everything I can be and more when I’m gone... as the eldest and strongest, you are his guardian... his protector... his friend... be there for him...

Thor: I will, Mom... I give you my word...

*Frigga smiles warmly and nods. She turns to Loki*

Frigga: Loki, you must always show Thor the light in his endeavors, even if they may seem fruitless... show him failure is alright... don’t ever let him stop trying... remind him, he doesn’t have to live up to some set standards... he needs to make his own path... show him it’s ok to be afraid, even for the bravest of warriors... but it’s not ok to give in... show him how to handle these emotions that seem so strange to him... help him when he has too much to handle... remind him he doesn’t have to face the world alone... remind him what an amazing and strong hero, king, warrior, and brother he truly is.

*she whispers*

Frigga: And do me a favor and try to get him off the sauce...

*Loki chuckles tearfully*

Loki: I will...

*Frigga smiles and wipes his tears*

Frigga: I’m so proud of you both... no matter what mistakes you may make...

*Loki sighs and kisses her hand. Thor puts his forehead on hers*

Thor: Thanks, Mom...

*they suddenly hear scurrying behind them. They turn to see Rocket, scrambling into the room on all fours, carrying the aether. He stops, frantically closes the door, and pants, leaning against it. He looks up at the brothers, then at Frigga, who smiles. He chuckles nervously*

Rocket: You must be mom... Um... I got the aether.

Part VII: Back When We Started

*Frigga smiles warmly. She turns to her sons*

Frigga: Then this is where we must part ways, my sons... you have a job to do...

*Loki sighs. Thor takes a swig from his flask, tears in his eyes and stands up. He walks up to the window and stares out of it. Loki stands, helping his mother up. He kisses her on the forehead and sighs*

Loki: I’ll be a better man, Mother... better than the monster Thanos turned me into... I will make up for what I’ve done...

Frigga: Oh, Loki... you’re already one of the greatest men I know... you just need to find your way...

*Loki chuckles tearfully. He looks at Thor*

Loki: I believe I have... I may have finally found who I am...

*Frigga smiles*

Frigga: I always knew who you were...

*Thor sighs and shakes his head. He turns back to Frigga. He walks briskly up to her, Loki stepping back, and takes her hands*

Thor: Mom, there’s something I need to tell you. Something bad is about to happen-

Frigga: Something I will find out on my own.

*Loki sighs. He too would give anything to prevent what happens today, but he knows it’s too risky for this timeline*

Thor: But, Mo-

Frigga: You mustn’t meddle with my future, my son. What is meant to happen shall happen.

*Thor sighs. He knows she’s right. But that doesn’t make it any easier*

Thor: I love you, Mom...

Frigga: I love you too... both of you...

*Loki approaches and she kisses his cheek. He sighs and joins rocket’s side. They turn on their suits. Thor copies. They’re about to head back to HQ, when...*

Thor: Wait!

*he closes his eyes and extends his hand, concentrating hard. Loki watches with an all knowing grin*

Rocket: What is he doing?

Frigga: Sometimes it takes a second.

*Suddenly, a grey blur flies through the window, into Thor’s hand. He opens one eye to see... Mjölnir. He laughs softly with delight.*

Thor: I’m still worthy...

Loki: Of course you are... being afraid doesn’t change that...

*Thor chuckles*

Thor: Yeah, but I thought alcoholism might... I guess this is it, then... bye, Mom...

*Thor and Loki meet eyes*

Rocket: Lets go home. Three... two... one...

*they hit the buttons and feel a lurch. When Thor looks up he sees his friends. They’re back where they started. Tony wastes no time*

Tony: Everyone have what they went for?

*Steve holds up the scepter. Tony shows the tesseract. Bruce carefully holds the time stone. Clint sighs and holds up the soul stone. Nebula shows the orb. Rocket holds up the aether. Now they all stare at Thor expectantly. Thor smiles tearfully. Loki steps timidly out from behind Thor. Tony whoops triumphantly. Scott waves cautiously at Loki. Bruce smiles warmly. Loki sighs*

Loki: Ok... um... wow... hi...

*Steve suddenly walks right up to Loki. He stares at Loki scrutinizingly, his arms crossed. Loki gulps*

Loki: C-Captain Rogers... um... the last time I was here...

Steve: You were trying to take over earth.

*Loki chuckles nervously*

Loki: You see, funny thing about that is-

Steve: Shut up.

*Loki falls silent*

Thor: Hey, if you’ve got a problem with my brother, you can take it up with m-

*Steve holds up one finger, silencing Thor. He suddenly cracks a smile. He extends his hand*

Steve: If Thor believes there’s good in you, so do I... welcome to the team.

*Loki looks shocked. After a moment, he smiles and shakes Steve’s hand*

Loki: Thank you, Captain...

Steve: Call me Steve...

*Tony walks up*

Tony: Hey there, Shakespeare. Whatcha been doing these days now that you don’t have the glow stick of destiny? Pushing more people out of their own buildings?

*Loki sighs. Tony is still bitter*

Loki: Well, I couldn’t have expected everyone to have vouched for my return. Not after what I’ve done.

Tony: Quite the contrary. It was my idea. I funded it, even created a whole new mechanism just to get to you.

Loki: W-What? Why?

Tony: I saw what state Thor was in, and decided you were the most logical, and technically speaking, the only possible choice. Before Thor isolated himself, he was always moping. When we asked him what was up he’d say-

*he begins to speak in a deep voice with a bad British accent, poorly imitating Thor*

Tony: “Well, other than me losing the entire universe like an idiot, I miss Loki, he did sacrifice his life for me after all.”

*Loki looks at Thor and smiles. Thor, however, is looking at something else, with a look of concern on his face. Loki hears soft sobbing. He follows Thor’s gaze to see Clint, wiping his eyes*

Thor: Barton...

*Clint doesn’t respond*

Thor: Natasha, what happened? Natasha?... where’s Natasha?

Clint: She’s gone... she sacrificed herself... it should have been me...

*there’s a long silence as everyone realizes what must have happened*

Loki: A soul for a soul...

*Bruce clenches his fist. It’s tinted green. There are tears in his eyes. Steve hangs his head. Tony looks as if he wants to say “I told you so” but doesn’t. Scott looks like he doesn’t know what to do. Thor sighs. Natasha... is gone... Later, everyone is in the lab, watching Tony work. Loki sits at the same table Thor did all those years ago, eating leftovers he found in the fridge. Thor, who stands beside him, smirks*

Thor: Hungry?

Loki: You would be too if you hadn’t eaten in five years.

Thor: Fair point.

*they suddenly hear Tony*

Tony: Aaaaaaand... done!

*he takes the completed infinity gauntlet in his hands*

Tony: Now we just have to figure out who’s gonna snap their fingers.

*Thor instantly steps forward*

Thor: I’ll do it.

Loki: What?

Bruce: Wait, Thor, we should at least take a minute to consider our options.

Thor: I’m the strongest avenger! You saw what it did to Thanos, it could kill you guys!

Tony: Yeah, and it could kill you! Besides, Thor, your in no condition, mentally, emotionally, or physically. You’re mentally unstable, emotionally exhausted, and drunk.

Thor: I’m fine! Let me have this! A chance to fix what I’ve done!

Tony: Thor...

*Loki looks to be thinking. He looks at his brother. He’s right. No mortal could survive wielding the gauntlet. But Thor’s in no state. He remembers his mother’s words. It’s up to him to lighten Thor’s burden. He sighs and stands*

Loki: I’ll do it...

*everyone goes silent and looks at Loki*

Thor: What? No! It’s too risky! I forbid it!

Tony: And... um... no offense, Loki... but... we don’t exactly trust you with that power.

Loki: You have no choice. None of you could survive, and Thor’s obviously too drunk! It’s the only way. I know you have no reason to trust me, and that’s ok. But if you want to get back those you lost, you must.

Tony: Why would you risk your life for us?

Loki: Because...

*He looks at Thor then down at his own hands*

Loki: These are the hands of a murderer... I had nothing... I had no identity... nothing mattered... because what does the world mean without those you love most...

*Tears well in his eyes. His voice shakes*

Loki: But now there is something that matters to me... more than anything I’ve ever known... I have a chance to make things right... make it up to him... please... let me do this... let me fulfill my promise... my purpose... let me be there for him... please...

*by now, Loki’s in tears*

Steve: Alright, Loki... I trust you.

Loki: Y-you do?

Steve: Of course. I trust Thor’s judgement, don't I?

*Bruce sighs*

Bruce: I trust you too... just don’t make me regret it.

Tony: No way, no way! I’m not leaving my son- er, intern’s fate and my daughter’s future in your hands!

Loki: Anthony-

Tony: It's Tony, Shakespeare.

Loki: Ok, Tony, you once told me, if you couldn’t save the world, you’d avenge it. This is the chance to do just that.

*Tony sighs. He picks up the gauntlet and approaches Loki.*

Tony: If anything happens to her...

Loki: I won’t let anything happen. If you don’t trust me...

*he looks at Thor*

Loki: Trust my rage... I hate Thanos for what he did to me... if I have a chance to fix something he did... I’m going to take it... and I’m going to do it right... Thanos, and all he stood for shall fall...

*Tony sighs and gives Loki the gauntlet. He puts is suit on and everyone gets ready. Thor, watching the scene unfold, speaks warningly*

Thor: If you die... I’m gonna kill you...

*Loki raises one eyebrow. He looks to be questioning Thor’s logic. He shrugs it off. He looks down at the mind stone and sighs. It’s time to take his revenge. Thor watches in horror as Loki carefully puts the gauntlet on, it automatically adjusting to fit his hand. The moment it’s on, the stones start sending energy into Loki’s arm. He screams. It’s agony.*

Steve: Loki! Are you alright?!

*Loki cries out, falling to his knees. Thor reaches for his brother, Steve and Bruce holding him back*

Thor: Get it off of him! It’s too much!

*Loki roars, his eyes watering. He sees his entire life flash before his eyes. Frigga. Odin. Thor. Asgard. Heimdall. Sif. The warriors three. Jane. The Valkyrie. He sees Thanos. Hela. Laufey. He sees the moment he had found out what he was. The attack on New York. Hel. He hears his Mother’s pleas. His father’s livid yelling. His brother begging for him to spare innocent people. Loki’s tears fall to the ground. He must be strong. He knows Thanos isn't truly dead until they bring back the vanished. Until his very cause is destroyed. Loki brings his shaking hand up...*

Loki: Thanos... shall... fall!

*He snaps. A huge blast of energy is sent out. When the dust clears, they see Loki, lying on the floor. His arm and neck are scarred and burned. Bruce quickly removes the gauntlet and Tony runs up and sprays an extinguisher on his steaming arm. Thor kneels down next to him and puts his hand under Loki’s head*

Thor: Loki! Loki say something!

*Loki’s eyes open slightly*

Loki: Thor...

Thor: Loki, it’s ok, I’m here. It’s over now. I’m so sorry! I never should have let you do this!

Loki: Please... you couldn’t have stopped me... if you tried...

*Thor chuckles tearfully. Loki pushes himself up slightly*

Loki: I’m fine... just a little disoriented... what about you?...

Thor: I’m ok now that you are...

Scott: Did it work?

Loki: I don’t know...

*Clint’s phone, which is on the table, begins to buzz. Clint runs and picks it up. He holds it up to his ear. Tears well in his eyes*

Clint: Babe... babe...

*Scott looks out of the window to see two birds flying together happily. He grins. But Loki’s eyes go wide. Loki sees something from his angle on the floor that Scott can’t*

Scott: Guys... I think we did it-

Loki: LOOK OUT!

*he watches as a giant fireball flies into the building. There’s a huge explosion.*

Part VIII: Ambushed

*When Loki comes to, he’s lying under the rubble. He moans. He suddenly hears coughing. He looks to see Thor crawling towards him*

Thor: Loki... Loki, what happened?

*Loki sits weakly up. There’s a beam trapping his legs*

Loki: Thanos happened... that was his ship...

Thor: What?... no... that’s impossible... he’s dead... he has to be...

Loki: Maybe our world’s Thanos is... But what if... what if he isn’t our Thanos... what if he came through the quantum vortex...

*He coughs violently. Thor pushes the beam off Loki’s legs*

Thor: We need to get out of here before the rubble collapses in on itself.

Loki: Agreed. Look. I see an opening.

*Thor follows his gaze to see a light. He nods and pushes the rubble out of the way. When they emerge, and their eyes adjust, they see the remains of the building. A giant ship. And Thanos sitting on a rock. Thor gulps*

Thor: You were right...

*he looks at Loki, who’s staring at Thanos. He looks angry. This is the man who took his mind. Ruined his life. Killed him and half of all life. He thinks about what Thanos had done to his brother. Tried to kill him. Use him as a bargaining chip. Hurt him. Traumatized him. Broke him. Forced him to watch helplessly as his only family died trying to protect him. Loki feels his anger rising. Undoing what he did is not enough...*

Loki: I’m going to kill him...

*Thor holds him back as he tries to attack Thanos*

Thor: Loki! Wait! If there’s anything you taught me, it’s that you mustn’t let your emotions control you! You must think before you act! It could be a trap! We need to analyze the situation, and wait for backup!

*Loki sighs. Thor’s right. The last time he let his anger control him, bad things happened. People got hurt. Thor got hurt. He got hurt. He stops struggling. Thor lets him go*

Loki: Then we wait for your friends...

Thor: Our friends... you’ve earned their respect...

*Loki smiles. So they stand and watch. But as the minutes pass, Thanos doesn’t move. Loki cocks his head. Suddenly they hear footsteps approaching from behind. The turn to see Steve, suited up.*

Steve: Hey! What- Oh, hold that thought, I think I see Tony.

*He runs back in and when he comes out, Tony’s with him.*

Tony: Alright, what’s the sitch?

Thor: He’s just been sitting there. Hasn’t moved a muscle.

Tony: Then we attack this son of a gun...

Thor: You know it’s a trap, right?

Steve: Yep.

Thor: Then let’s do this...

*he summons stormbreaker and Mjölnir. A blast of lightning crashes down around him. When it clears, he’s in more ceremonial armor(for this legendary battle), his cape flowing in the wind. He wears a winged helm, bearing Asgard’s crest. There are silver lighting bolts all over his armor. His hair and beard are braided and there’s lightning in his eyes. He holds both Mjölnir and stormbreaker. Loki summons his daggers and helm(of which the back is now completely removed, the helm only supported by magic). His armor slowly changes to something more ceremonial. Golden vines creep up his armor. His belt slowly morphs into a golden snake ornament, slithering into place around his waist. Royal disks, representing his place in Thor’s family, appear on his armor. Olive leaves begin to grow around his neck and wrists, representing the peace he’s fighting for with his brother. A braid, streaked with green, appears in his hair, mirroring Thor. He grins mischievously. He looks at Thor*

Loki: You still scared?

Thor: Horrified.

*Loki smirks*

Loki: Me too. But maybe it won’t be so horrifying together. Besides, if you can face Hela and Mother in one day, there’s no doubt in my mind you can face him.

Thor: Maybe, Brother... Maybe...

*Loki nods determinedly, repeating the words he so desperately believes in*

Loki: Thanos shall fall...

*They approach Thanos. Thanos slowly stands and puts on his helmet.*

Thanos: I just want to thank you... you made me realize, as long as there are those who know what they lost, and not what they gained, there will always be those who fight...

Tony: What can I say? We’re stubborn as heck.

Thanos: I will shred this universe down to its last atom, and it will be reborn from the ashes, a grateful universe.

Steve: You can’t just kill everyone.

Thanos: This time there won’t be anyone to stop me, because nobody will know what they’ve lost... face it... you’ll never win...

*Loki quips*

Loki: And you will never be a god...

*Thor suddenly charges at Thanos, who pushes him back. Tony comes up from behind and blast Thanos, who pulls him of the air by his leg and throws him. Steve charges, Thanos pushing against his shield. He looks around*

Steve: Where’s... Loki?! We need the help!

Thor: I... I don’t know! He was just here!

Tony: I knew we couldn’t trust him!

*Thor gulps. Loki wouldn’t abandon him... would he? He suddenly feels something on his foot. He looks down to see a green snake slithering over his shoe and up to Thanos. It crawls up Thanos’s leg, around his torso, and onto his arm*

Thanos: What the-?

*the snake suddenly vanishes in a puff of smoke, and in its place, holding onto Thanos’s arm is*

Loki: BLERGH, it’s me!

*he stabs Thanos in the shoulder.*

Thor: YEAH! THAT’S HOW IT FEELS!

*Thanos shakes Loki off his arm. Loki kicks Thanos in the legs, nearly tripping him.*

Thanos: Why you little traitor!

*Loki stands*

Loki: I think you’re using that word wrong.

Thanos: How so?...

Loki: To be a traitor, I would have had to be loyal to you in the first place!

Thanos: You were loyal to me! You attacked your own dear brother you were so sure would come rescue you from my torture, even as he feasted in celebration of your suicide!

*Thor’s eyes go wide. Loki had been awaiting a rescue. And what had Thor done?*

Loki: YOU KIDNAPPED, TORTURED, AND MIND CONTROLLED ME! YOU MADE ME SAY AND DO THINGS THAT TORE MY LIFE APART! I WAS NOT ACTING OF MY FREE WILL AND YOU KNOW IT! I WAS NEVER LOYAL TO YOU! AND NOW YOU WILL PAY FOR THE THINGS YOU MADE ME DO! THE PEOPLE YOU MADE ME HURT!

Thanos: I saved your life...

*Steve and Tony meet eyes. Loki had been mind controlled like Clint. They had been fighting an innocent man. Acting cold towards him. When Loki said he hated Thanos for what he did to him, they had assumed he meant killing him. But could this be what he truly meant?*

Loki: YOU DIDN'T SAVE ANYTHING! DEATH WOULD HAVE BEEN A BETTER FATE THAN WHAT YOU PUT ME THROUGH! I’M NOT YOUR PUPPET! YOU CAN’T MAKE ME HURT THESE PEOPLE ANYMORE!

*he roars and stabs at Thanos who punches him. Loki staggers, blood dripping out of the corner of his mouth. Thanos kicks him back onto the ground, pinning him down with his foot. Loki winces. Thanos notices the burns on his hand and neck*

Thanos: You tried to wield the stones... they have weakened you... you’re a fool... and now you shall die like one...

Thor: NO!

*before Thanos can react, Mjölnir flies into him and hits him off Loki. Tony and Steve attack Thanos. Thor runs up and kneels down next to Loki, who sits up weakly*

Thor: Are you alright?!

Loki: He’s right... the snap has weakened me... much more than I thought... I can hardly land a blow...

Thor: Big deal. No one could.

Loki: That was when he had the stones.

Thor: Oh, come on. You’re not backing out on me now are you?

*Loki smirks and clasps Thor’s hand.*

Loki: Not on your life.

*Thor helps him up. Loki winces and grabs his injured arm*

Thor: You good?

Loki: I’ll be fine...

*Thor hesitates*

Thor: Loki... I’m sorry I didn’t come for you... I didn’t know... I would have risked life and limb to save you if I knew you were alive... and just so you know... I skipped most of the feast... I spent it mourning...

*Loki smiles*

Loki: Thank you, Brother.

*They look at Thanos, who’s still fighting Tony and Steve. Suddenly, Thanos hits tony back and against a rock. He doesn’t move. He’s out cold. Thanos kicks Steve back onto the ground. Steve winces and growls. Thanos runs up to the brothers and punches Loki back. Thor looks livid. Thanos dares try to hurt Loki again? As Thor looks upon Thanos, all he can see is the life draining from Loki’s body. He suddenly yells at Thanos*

Thor: You dare?! You have no idea how hard I’ve tried to wipe that horrible, haunting, awful image from my mind! Watching helplessly as you squeezed the life from him! Watching his broken, battered, lifeless corpse fall just feet away from me on the ground! Not being able to do anything about it! Being helpless to save the one person I cared for most in the world! You can’t unsee that, believe me, I’ve tried! I’ve tried so hard to erase that horrible, horrible memory! Even if it meant wiping my entire mind! I tried to drink until I was senseless, isolate myself until I forgot the vast universe out my door! But nothing worked! I had to watch that horrible scene unfold every time I closed my eyes! I broke inside every time I heard his name! And you’ll pay for every second of agony I endured!

Thanos: I don’t even know what you’re talking about.

*At this, Thor’s eyes shine with rage like fire. The fact that he doesn’t even know the horrible grief he put him through. Doesn’t have any idea the horrors inflicted by his own hands. Thor roars and throws stormbreaker. Thanos catches it and kicks Thor back against a rock. He takes Thor’s own axe and begins to push it into Thor’s chest. Thor pushes it back, but he’s no match for Thanos when it comes to brute strength. It gets closer and closer to his chest, when suddenly, a grey blur hits Thanos back. Thor looks to see it fly into Steve’s hand... Mjölnir. He is worthy*

Thor: I knew it...

Steve: Sorry, bud. Didn’t want to steal your thunder, so to speak.

*Thor smiles. He looks at Loki and his eyes go wide. He runs up and kneels down next to him*

Thor: Loki!

*Steve looks at Tony, who’s unconscious. He looks at Thor, who’s tending to his injured, weakened brother. Thanos grabs his double ended sword and charges at him. Thanos strikes Steve’s shield repeatedly with his sword. Steve watches in horror as his shield begins to crack. A piece of it flies off. Then another. Thanos kicks him back onto the ground. Steve groans. He’s white as a sheet and covered in blood. He’s alone. His shield is broken. It’s been over 80 years, and he’s still fighting people twice his size. If only Bucky could see him now.*

Steve: Looks like it’s just the two of us...

Thanos: I wouldn’t be so sure...

*Steve watches in horror as an army comes over the horizon, behind Thanos. He stands no chance. But he’s not giving up. Not ‘til the end of the line. He tightens his broken shield and stands, ready to take on the whole army alone. But suddenly, he hears static in his earpiece. Then a familiar voice*

Voice: Cap? Cap, do you read me?

Steve: Sam?

Sam: On your left...

*he hears crackling behind him and to the left. He turns to see an orange portal opening. Out steps T’Challa, Okoye, Bucky, and Shuri. Sam flies through. Groot follows. Steve grins. Another portal opens. Out comes Doctor Strange, the guardians, and Spider-Man. Hundreds more portals open, bringing in just about every hero they know. Thor and Loki watch as the Valkyrie flies in on her pegasus. Loki gapes. Thor smirks.*

Thor: Come on! Don’t want to miss the party!

*He helps Loki up, and they join the others, including Tony, who has regained consciousness, and stand beside Steve*

Strange: Is that everyone?

Wong: What, you want more?

*Suddenly, Hulk jumps out of the rubble, making the way for Rocket, Scott, Rhodey, and the others, including Clint, who holds the gauntlet. They join the line up. Steve grins. Thor and Loki meet eyes*

Thor: It’s time to end this...

*Loki nods*

Steve: Avengers...

*Mjölnir flies into his hand*

Steve: Assemble...

*They run into battle*

Part IX: Final Battle

*as they’re fighting Thanos’s army, trying to distract them from the gauntlet, which is being passed from person to person to keep it from Thanos, Thor and Loki talk*

Thor: How I’ve missed this!

Loki: Yes. It must have been a while since you last fought like this.

Thor: I meant fighting along side you. Brother, I dreamt of the day we’d fight side by side once more. Just to see you one more time. Now, the only fantasy preserving my sanity has become a reality. I have my best friend back. My partner in crime. It’s just like when we were children. With you by my side, I am finally happy. I feel whole again. And I would not trade that for all the glorious battle in this universe.

*Loki smiles.*

Loki: Neither would I.

*Loki watches his brother fight with confidence. A staggering change from the man who had been sobbing into his shoulder just hours ago. He’s finally realized he’s not in this alone. And so he holds himself tall, braving the things that scare him so. Just like when they were little, constantly getting themselves into trouble much bigger than themselves. But they were not afraid, no matter how horrifying the situation might be. For they always had each other. Granted, Thor is still horrified. But the measure of bravery is not the lack of fear, but one’s ability not to flee from it. Something Thor, who before this never knew fear the likes of this, is finally getting the hang of. He’s regaining his emotional strength, and in doing so, strengthening his powers, that are linked to his emotions. Loki suddenly cracks a mischievous smile*

Loki: Speaking of when we were children... you thinking what I’m thinking?

*Thor looks confused. Still fighting back the soldiers one handed, he looks at Loki. He sees a glimmer of mischief in Loki’s eye and instantly knows. He grins and nods. Meanwhile, Peter Parker is fighting, holding the gauntlet, overwhelmed by the soldiers surrounding him, when suddenly, he hears someone yelling. He looks to see Thor, supporting Loki*

Thor: GET HELP! MY BROTHER’S DYING! HELP HIM!!!

*he throws Loki into the soldiers, knocking them down. Loki laughs, as Thor helps him up*

Loki: That’s so humiliating!

Thor: You know you love it.

Loki: Yeah...

*he smirks and looks up at Thor*

Loki: I do.

*Peter’s mask retreats and he runs up to Loki*

Peter: Thanks for the save! I’m Peter Parker!

Loki: Loki Odinson. Charmed.

Peter: Hey, didn’t you attack New York once?

Loki: Possibly.

Peter: Cool, cool. But you’re good now right?

Loki: I would say so.

Peter: Ok, nice.

*Loki smiles. He likes this kid. Peter turns to Thor and goes wide eyed*

Peter: Holy cow... you’re Thor! Mr. Stark told me all about you! You’re so cool!

Thor: Thanks. And you must be the Spider-Man Stark’s always talking about.

Peter: He talks about me?!

*he flushes red and clears his throat hastily*

Peter: Er, I mean, cool.

*Loki smirks. He suddenly hears something. The beating of wings. He looks to see the Valkyrie landing her pegasus just a few feet away from them.*

Valkyrie: My king, Thanos is headed towards the fr-

*She suddenly goes wide eyed, spotting Loki. She dismounts and approaches the brothers.*

Loki: Wow... hi...

Valkyrie: You’re alive...

Loki: Yeah, I-

*She suddenly slaps him*

Valkyrie: I THOUGHT YOU WERE DEAD!

*Loki looks dumbstruck. He looks at her in disbelief. He can’t believe she just slapped him. Finally, flabbergasted, he breathes the words*

Loki: I love you...

*She goes wide eyed. Loki flushes red in embarrassment*

Loki: I-I’m sorry, I don’t know wh-

*She suddenly grabs his collar and kisses him. Loki looks shocked. He looks at Thor, who grins mischievously. He holds one hand over Peter’s eyes. He winks. Finally, Loki closes his eyes and puts his arms around the Valkyrie. She holds her arms around his neck. After a moment of this, they stop, their eyes still closed. Loki chuckles*

Loki: I missed you too...

Valkyrie: I can’t believe you’re alive... I saw you die...

Loki: Yeah, well I die a lot, so... I’m kind of a handful...

Valkyrie: So I’ve heard.

*She suddenly, as if remembering something, clears her throat and steps back, blushing*

Valkyrie: I-I’d better go. I’m supposed to be keeping an eye out from above.

*she chuckles nervously*

Loki: Oh, o-ok. Bye...

Valkyrie: Bye...

*she mounts her pegasus, smiles, and takes off. Loki smiles. Thor’s smile fades and he sighs. He feels slight fear in the pit of his stomach. Loki is happy, and that’s great... but what if Loki forgets about him? Thor could lose him. He just got him back. Could this have been part of why he acted out even more when Thor met Jane? It’s safe to say Thor’s grown slightly paranoid. Loki sees the look on Thor’s face and smiles. He elbows him gently*

Loki: Relax... you’ll always be my best friend... and my brother... I’m not going anywhere...

*Thor smiles, his nerves noticeably eased. He teases*

Thor: Yeah, we’re sort of like a package deal, aren’t we?

*Loki rolls his eyes and smiles. He suddenly gasps*

Loki: LOOK OUT!

*he pushes Thor out of the way and, out on nowhere, a laser crashes down next to them. Then another. He looks to see Thanos’s ship firing lasers down all over the battlefield, taking out many, some being Thanos’s own. Loki goes wide eyed. He turns to Peter*

Loki: Peter, run! Get yourself and the gauntlet to safety! Go!

Peter: Yes sir!

*He runs off, dodging lasers. Loki whispers*

Loki: Stay safe, child of Midgard...

*Thor smiles*

Thor: You’re already making friends.

Loki: Oh, shut up. Come on, we need to-

*The firing suddenly stops*

Loki: ... run?...

*Thor suddenly goes wide eyed. Loki follows his gaze to see something glowing, flying through the ship, sending it crashing to the ground, and stopping the fire. Thor grins. Captain Marvel. She dives down to the battlefield. Thor knew he liked her. Thor looks at Loki and grins*

Thor: Things are heating up! Come! Let us go find Thanos and the others!

*Loki nods. They begin to fight their way through the battlefield. After a while, they see Tony fighting Thanos. Thanos hits Tony back to the ground. Thanos lifts his hand. Thor watches in horror*

Thanos: I am inevitable...

*he snaps... but nothing happens. He looks down at the gauntlet to find the stones are gone. He looks at Tony, who smirks and begins to lift his hand. His armor is reforming around the stolen stones. Energy is sent up into his arm. He winces. There are tears in his eyes. Thor realizes what’s about to happen.*

Thor: Stark...

*Tony meets his eyes. The world seems to be moving in slow motion. Thor sobs softly. Though the had had their differences, Tony has always been one of his most honorable allies. And one of his best friends. Thor had been so obsessed with what he lost, he never stopped to think about what he had. The memories he had made. This was it. This was what he had been hiding from for years. This was losing more. He looks at Loki. Granted, he wouldn’t change what he did for the world. For family comes first. And Loki is his entire family. But he can’t help but wonder if this could have been avoided... but maybe it still can. No mortal can handle that power alone... but maybe he doesn’t have to be alone. Without warning, Thor runs up and grabs Tony’s shoulder. Some of the energy flowing through Tony flows up Thor’s arm. He winces. Steve, who had been watching in horror, catches on and joins him, grabbing Tony’s other shoulder.*

Steve: We finish this the way we started it.... together!...

*Tony smiles. He remembers when they had last parted ways. His last goodbyes were with these two remarkable heroes. They’re not leaving his side again. Not this time. Maybe he will get to watch Morgan and Peter grow up. Tony looks Thanos dead in the eye*

Tony: And I... am Iron Man...

*he snaps. A huge blast of energy is sent out. Loki shields himself, planting his feet firmly on the ground as not to be knocked back by the blast. When the dust finally clears, he looks up to see Tony lying limp in Steve’s arms, and Thor coughing violently. The army around them begins to fade away. Thanos watches in horror. He sighs and sits down defeatedly. He looks up at Loki, who smirks. He waves mockingly as Thanos slowly fades away. Thor smiles and laughs with delight. They won. It’s finally over. But his euphoria is short lived. He looks at Tony.*

Thor: Stark!

*Tony, who is not Asgardian nor a super soldier, had gotten most of the blast. He’s limp*

Steve: Tony, can you hear me? Tony?

*Tony doesn’t respond. Peter Parker, who had just found the others, runs up and kneels down in front of Tony*

Peter: Mr. Stark? Mr. Stark, are you ok? Tony? Dad?!

*Tony’s eyes open slightly. He looks at Peter*

Tony: Hey, Pete...

*Peter sighs with relief and hugs him. Tony smiles and puts one hand on his back.*

Peter: We did it, Mr. Stark...

*Tony sighs and closes his eyes, passing out. Thor smiles. He looks at Loki, who stands at a respectful distance, his hands held neatly in front of him. He smiles and nods. Thor rolls his eyes*

Thor: Get over here, you idiot.

*Thor holds open his arms. Loki chuckles softly. He suddenly tackle hugs Thor, knocking him over*

Thor: Woah!

*he chuckles. Loki sits up and helps Thor up. Thor hugs him gently. Loki whispers*

Loki: I told you so...

Thor: Pardon?

Loki: I told you the sun would shine on us again... we’re home... we’re home...

*Thor smiles. He hugs his brother tightly. All the avengers slowly gather round the small group. The Valkyrie smiles. Bucky gives Steve a fist bump and clasps his hand. Pepper kisses her unconscious husband. Thor thinks on Loki’s words... they’re home...*

Part X: Home

*When Tony comes to, he hears whispering. He opens his eyes to see his family and friends. Pepper, Morgan, Happy, Peter, Rhodey, Steve, Thor, Bruce, Clint, and even Loki and Bucky. They’re all in the room whispering amongst themselves. Tony notices he’s in a bed at the hospital. He sits up weakly. Morgan notices and beams*

Morgan: Daddy!

*she runs up and jumps in his lap. Tony chuckles*

Tony: Hey, squirt! Boy, I missed you.

*Morgan smiles*

Morgan: You were sleeping for a long time!

Tony: Really? I guess I’m just a sleepyhead.

*Pepper approaches and kisses Tony. Peter watches and sighs. Tony looks at him and smiles*

Tony: C’mon, Pete, it’s a family moment.

*Peter smiles. He hugs Tony. Tony chuckles. When they’re done, Thor and Steve approach him. Steve smiles*

Steve: That was a real brave thing you did back there, Tony...

Tony: That means a lot Cap. Couldn’t have done it without you two.

*Thor sighs*

Thor: Tony, I cannot thank you enough for everything you’ve done... if it weren’t for you and your plan, I would still be wasting my life alone and too drunk to think in my dirty old hut... Loki wouldn’t be here... and if you hadn’t done what you just did, we’d all be dead... I owe you my mind, sanity, and my life... and an apology...

Tony: For what?

Thor: I always assumed you were a selfish and vain mortal... but you proved me wrong... I misjudged you...

Tony: It’s no big deal, Point Break. Besides, I’m not the only one who’s been misjudged. Loki isn’t who he seems, is he?

*Thor looks at Loki, who is watching. Loki quickly looks away. Thor turns back and smiles softly*

Thor: That’s something you can ask him yourself. Later. Loki and I have an errand to run.

*he turns and leaves, Loki following close behind. Later, Thor, Loki, and the Valkyrie stand just outside New Asgard, talking*

Valkyrie: Now That you’re back, we can begin to- are you alright?

*Thor, who had been staring off into the distance, looks at her and smiles*

Thor: Yes... Just thinking...

Valkyrie: What about?

*Thor sighs*

Thor: I’ve spent so much of my life thinking about who I’m supposed to be, I’ve never considered who I could be... who I want to be...

Valkyrie: Sire?

*Thor continues as if he hadn’t heard her*

Thor: With Natasha gone, someone has to run things down at headquarters... rebuild... be ready at a moment’s notice... hold the team together...

Valkyrie: Thor...

*he sighs*

Thor: I want to be a hero... take care of my family... find a home again... back on that battlefield... seeing all my friends... feeling that surge of pure euphoria again... my brother in my arms... I knew... that was where I was meant to be... Loki said it himself... for the first time in over five years... we were home... I belong with the avengers... as one of them... and that’s something I can’t be from here...

Valkyrie: What are you saying?

*Thor meets Loki’s eyes. Loki smiles*

Thor: Loki and I have decided to settle in New York... take over where Natasha left off... continue what she did tirelessly for five years... Tony has agreed to let us live at HQ when it’s rebuilt... we will be spending most of our time there... I will technically still be king... but I need someone to run things in my absence...

Valkyrie: Who do you have in mind?

*Thor smiles and looks at her*

Thor: I’m looking at her...

*Valkyrie goes wide eyed. She suddenly laughs*

Valkyrie: Good one...

*Thor raises one eyebrow. Her expression changes*

Valkyrie: You’re being serious?

*Thor nods.*

Thor: There’s no one I’d trust more. Plus, Loki vouched for you.

*Valkyrie smiles. She looks at Loki, who winks. She looks out at New Asgard*

Valkyrie: I’m gonna make a lot of changes around here, you know that right?

Thor: I’m counting on it... your majesty...

*They shake hands. Loki approaches and kisses her forehead*

Valkyrie: You’ll come visit, right?

Loki: All the time. And you’d better too. And if you can’t, write me.

Valkyrie: I think calling would be faster.

*Loki chuckles*

Loki: Well I’ll let you know when I’ve learned to use a primitive Midgardian phone.

*She smiles. Loki kisses her, before turning and boarding the Milano, which is their ride home, purely thanks to Rocket, who’s grown rather fond of Thor. Thor nods and follows. As they lift off, they wave at the Valkyrie out the window. After a minute Thor, still looking out the window, sighs. Loki stands by him*

Thor: Can I ask a stupid question?

Loki: Better than anyone else I know.

*Thor gives him a look. Loki chuckles*

Loki: What troubles you?

*Thor sighs*

Thor: Did I make the right choice?... should I have stayed?...

*Loki sighs*

Loki: Thor... I know you...

*he takes Thor’s hand gently*

Loki: This is what you want... you mustn’t let some projected standard determine your fate... only you can do that... trust me... I’ve made that mistake... when it comes to choosing between what people expect of you or your happiness... choose happiness... I tried to turn myself into someone Asgard would be proud of... but in doing so ruined my own life... this is clearly where you belong... where you want to be... so you should be there... let your heart guide you... don’t do something just for honor or pride... do it because it’s what you love...

*Thor smiles*

Thor: Then I definitely made the right choice...

*Loki smiles. Thor would be doing what he loved, and they would be doing it together. Something worth far more than any throne. Thor sighs. This will be a whole new chapter of his life. One that looks bright. Perhaps things are finally looking up...*

Epilogue

*Several months later, there’s a knock at the door of the newly rebuilt HQ. Loki, whose arm is still scarred, looks up from his book (Peter had convinced him to start reading Harry Potter) and yells*

Loki: Thor, they’re here!

*Thor calls from the other room*

Thor: Can you get it? I’m working on something.

Loki: Very well.

*Loki stands and heads for the door. He stops to look at a crooked, slightly charred painting, salvaged from Asgard(the tesseract wasn’t the only thing Loki saved). It’s a picture of Thor, him, and their parents. Loki smiles. He thinks about how much Thor has grown up since then. How he’s stepped up to the plate as the head of the family now that their parents are gone. Taken such good care of the family he has left. Loki misses his parents, but Thor has truly filled the void. He’s taken on every role they left behind, and, in a way, become Loki’s entire family in one. They’ve grown so close since the war ended. They spent years apart, and are only beginning to make up for lost time. But in a way, it feels as if not a moment has passed. They’ve grown as inseparable and close as they were when they were children. Something Loki would not trade for the world. Thor and the Valkyrie are his family now. And he owes them this amazing life he’s found. The role of a brother, a friend, a lover, a prince, and an avenger. A life better than any he could have dreamed up back during... the incident. And to top it all, over the past few months, he’s made so many friends. Tony (who gets a kick out of Loki’s pranks). Peter Parker, who, to Loki’s shock, looks up to him a great deal. Dr. Strange, a fellow sorcerer. Wanda (who Loki secretly thinks Thor may have developed feelings for). Bucky, who Loki can relate to on a deep level. Bruce, who he can bond with over Ragnarok. Peter Quill, to the other guardians disbelief. Little Morgan Stark, who loves his “magic shows”. Sam Wilson, arguably the only sane person on the team. Nebula, who, again, he can quite easily relate to, being a blue skinned, ex-evil, once under appreciated, younger sibling, who worked for Thanos. Mantis, who’s childlike innocence intrigues Loki. Rocket, who helped save his life. Korg, who is so oblivious it’s amusing. Scott, who’s fascinated by all Asgardians. Hope(he likes her no-nonsense demeanor). And even Carol, who lets Loki mess around with her flurkin, Goose(who has swallowed several of his favorite daggers). Really, the only person still bitter is Clint. But Loki doesn’t mind. He’s just happy to have a home, family, and friends at all. His thoughts are suddenly interrupted by banging at the door*

Loki: Coming!

*Loki straightens the painting and runs to the door. He opens it to see Tony, Morgan(who’s in her fathers arms), Pepper, Peter, and Peter’s Aunt May. They’re here for the avengers dinner party. May even brought a dish. It looks disgusting, but no one would dare tell her that. Loki smiles*

Peter: Hi, Mr. Loki!

Loki: Hello, Peter. Come in, lad. Thor’s still getting ready, but he’ll be out shortly.

*Morgan beams*

Morgan: Mr. Lokiiiiiii!

Loki: Hello, Miss Stark. Have you been causing any mischief for your father?

Morgan: Yeaaahhhh.

*Loki smiles and winks*

Loki: Good.

Tony: What are you talking about, she’s been an angel.

*Loki chuckles. When they’re all in, he closes the door.*

Tony: Love what you did with the place since last time, Frosty.

Loki: Thanks! I added some traditional Asgardian design to the-

Tony: Didn’t ask for the story, bud.

*Loki rolls his eyes*

Tony: By the way, the others are gonna be a few minutes late. Strange is still gathering them up to portal them in. We flew here via private jet.

Loki: Of course you did.

*he cups his hands around his mouth*

Loki: Thor! Stark’s family is here! Are you almost done?

*he hears Thor*

Thor: Coming!

*Thor comes down the stairs, a poorly wrapped parcel in his hand. His hair is short once more, though not quite as short as last time, and his beard has been trimmed. He looks a lot neater than he had a few months ago, and doesn’t appear to be drunk. His cybernetic eye is no longer malfunctioning. He’s wearing a clean shirt and jeans. He doesn’t even have his flask with him. He places the package on a table and smiles.*

Thor: Hey, guys. Make yourself at home. Food’s in the kitchen. Cheeseburgers, per the lady’s request.

*Morgan giggles. Thor chuckles*

Thor: Go on. We’ll come when everyone else gets here.

Tony: Ok, then. C’mon, Pep.

*they head for the kitchen. Thor smiles. He looks at Loki, who leans his forearm horizontally, just above his head, against the window and looks out of it. Loki sighs*

Thor: What’s up?

*Loki looks at Thor and smiles weakly*

Loki: I just hope Brun can make it. I haven’t seen her since we last checked in on New Asgard a couple weeks ago.

Thor: I’m sure she’ll come.

*Loki sighs*

Loki: I hope you’re right. She’s been so overwhelmed lately. She could use some time to unwind.

*Thor grins*

Thor: What a gentleman.

*he ruffles Loki’s hair*

Loki: Thor, I just fixed my hair!

*Thor chuckles. Loki rolls his eyes and smiles. He summons something behind his back*

Loki: Very funny. But not as funny as this!

*he stabs Thor, who jumps. He rolls his eyes and pulls out the small throwing dagger*

Thor: Oh, real mature.

Loki: You know you love it.

*Thor smirks*

Thor: Yeah...

*he puts an arm around Loki, his other hand in his pocket*

Thor: I do...

*he suddenly looks up*

Thor: Oh, I almost forgot!

*Loki cocks his head*

Loki: Forgot what?

*Thor goes and picks up the package. He hands it to Loki, then leans against the wall, his arms crossed*

Thor: Got you something.

*Loki raises one eyebrow*

Loki: What’s the occasion? Have I forgotten another Midgardian holiday?

Thor: No occasion. Just thought you might like it.

*Loki shrugs and carefully unwraps the parcel. Inside is a framed photo. He examines it. It’s a picture of him, Thor, and the Valkyrie... his family...*

Thor: I see the way you look at the old family portrait... I figured it was time for an update...

*Loki smiles. But that’s not all in the parcel. Another, slightly bigger photo is in there. He recognizes it. It’s the picture Pepper took just after the final battle for the stones. All of the avengers together. Even Loki. Tony’s still unconscious in this photo. Loki laughs, slightly tearful*

Thor: And a picture of our friends...

*Loki looks up at Thor*

Loki: Thank you...

*Thor smiles*

Thor: Just to make sure you never again forget how many people care about you...

*Loki hugs him. He takes the photos and Thor watches as he carefully hangs them next to the portrait. He smiles. Suddenly, the doorbell rings. Loki runs and opens the door to see the others. Bucky, who pushes Steve (who had gone back in time to live his life with Peggy) in his wheelchair, Strange, who’s closing the giant portal he had brought them through, the Pym’s, the guardians, and several others. Loki smiles*

Loki: Come in. Tony and the others are already in the kitchen.

*they enter. Loki sighs, but as they come in, Loki sees someone had been standing behind them. He smiles. The Valkyrie*

Loki: Brun... you came.

*She smiles and approaches. She kisses him on the cheek*

Valkyrie: I wouldn’t miss it. Besides... you were right... I needed a break...

*Loki smirks*

Loki: Or, you just really missed me.

*she rolls her eyes and pushes him playfully*

Valkyrie: You wish.

*Loki chuckles. The Valkyrie takes his hand, and the three of them head to join the others. They walk past the pictures. Loki sighs contentedly. He smiles at Thor and the Valkyrie, and kisses the Valkyrie’s forehead. This place isn’t Asgard... but it’s home...*

Thor and Loki will return...
